Tiffin University
Objective
Create well-structured courses based on current adult learning methods for the undergrad and graduate programs.
I was hired full time to analyze course requirements, current design, and resources; then meet with department chairs and instructors/subject matter experts to form build plans based on departmental design philosophies; to establish milestones and collaboration timelines, meet review dates, develop assets (videos, presentations, images, infographics, applications, etc.), assessments, grading rubrics and guides; and to meet coding and accessibility standards, all while managing up to 12 courses at a time in addition to faculty and department projects.
Case Study - Remedial Course for Library
Task
Create a short remediation course in academic integrity designed for students who have violated the university’s plagiarism policy.
The Library Director, together with the University Provost and Dean of Academic Affairs, asked our department to create a short 100% asynchronous course capable of issuing a certificate and notifying office staff of completion. I was the assigned ID for the course.
Milestone 1
The Library Director and I went through a short Needs Analysis to determine the objectives and for the measurable Learning Outcomes. We then created a simple Action Map to plot and answer when and ifs will happen. The main delivery of materials would be through video lecture, unfortunately due to time constraints. The assessments would be a pre/post quiz and survey along with knowledge check quizzes in each module lesson. The build (design) Brief was then created. This was then reviewed and approved by the Dean.
Milestone II
After collaborating on ideas about learning activities, content structure, time parameters, complexity of knowledge, tone, accessibility, and course evaluation, we were able to to create a design prototype in Moodle with completion tracking and restrictions in place. After review and approval, this module could then be used as a template and guide.
Milestone III
Milestone 3 focused on completion of the modules for final review. The videos, scripts, quiz questions, graphics, and citation app (see below) were created, SME reviewed, and taken through the revision process multiple times in collaboration with student reviewers and the department. The course was then submitted for final review, approved and submitted to the QA team for final review and inclusion.
Citation Practice - Articulate Storyline 360
Overview
I was tasked by the Library Director to create a “game-like” application that could be used by all students in the university to practice formatting citations in APA. This would not only help students in the remediation course but also introduce a way for all students to learn this common format for references and citations.
This is an example of using Articulate Storyline 360 to create an application students can use to practice formatting citations and references.
Note: The application was developed for desktop and mobile devices but is unfortunately not 508 compliant due to the drag and drop feature being used. It could be redesigned to have dropdown menus instead of the drag and drop function and the instructions, graphics, and feedback in navigation could be addressed though alt text and reading order.
Application
Due to extreme time constraints, this project was created in less than a weeks time. The first milestone was to create a rough plan answering basic needs questions to determine audience, format, interaction, results, and evaluation. The instructions were to make the app simple to use, engaging, and informative.
After receiving the reviewed content copy, I created a learning experience based on spaced repetition and motivation by allowing users to “cheat” yet creating a way for them to better their experience forcing them to WANT to repeat the experience thus presenting them with proper citation formatting repeatedly. Patterns should be recognized and retained.
The motivation to repeat was created by adding an elapsed time to the final slide. A leaderboard would make this even more inviting.
